Street Sweeping

The goal of the Department of Community Maintenance is to keep all public streets free from litter and debris. We strive to maintain street durability and an attractive environment for our Fall River citizens. To accomplish this, we sweep major streets and residential streets weekly, except during periods of inclement weather.

About Street Sweeping

The City of Fall River has 2 Street Sweepers which maintains 780 streets and 280 miles and removes approximately 10,000 tons of debris each year.

The importance of street sweeping is to keep our storm drains free of debris that could possibly clog and cause flooding during a rain event. Secondly is the protection of the environment. Lastly, the outcome is the beneficial aesthetic enrichment that a freshly swept street generates.

The street sweepers are not designed to pick up large pieces, piles or wet debris. Here’s how you can help improve the cleanliness of your street:

  • Avoid piling leaves or other debris in the street or gutter.
  • Don’t rake, sweep, blow leaves or other debris in the street or gutter.
  • Keep long twigs and branches out of the street or gutter.
